As Environment Month draws to a close, the Caribbean Environment Youth Network and the Ministry of Environment and National Beautification will host a number of activities at the Folkestone Park and Marine Reserve, St James, on Saturday, June 30, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Held under the theme: Beat Plastic Pollution, the activities include an underwater clean-up from 9 to 11 a.m. Members of various dive associations, working in collaboration with the Coastal Zone Management Unit, will conduct the clean-up.  The items collected will be documented and also displayed.

Between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m., non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs) will stage an exhibition, featuring traditional local foods and confectioneries.

In addition, a “Model Family” picnic will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. During that time, patrons can view two families enjoying a plastic-free picnic to demonstrate that it is possible to minimise the impact of solid waste on beaches, especially from plastic waste.

Young Barbadians will also have an opportunity to articulate their views about Sustainable Consumption and Production, beating plastic pollution or sustainable development via a youth spoken word competition entitled: Advocacy Through The Arts, from 3 to 6 p.m.

The United Nations Environment Programme and the National Conservation Commission, also collaborated to host the day’s activities. (BGIS)
