Barbados is sending one of its smallest teams in recent times to the Central American and Caribbean (CAC) Bodybuilding and Fitness Championships.
That’s because national selectors have named just 12 athletes to compete at this month’s CAC Championships slated for Mexico on June 28. Barbados are seeking to win the team title for the first time in four years.
There is just one bodybuilder in comeback kid Martinus Durrant, a reflection of the steady decline in the sport over the last decade. The team have been set back by the absence of former Barbados champions Ramon Broomes and Shaquile Lavine, the former having failed a drug test conducted at last month’s Mr Bridgetown while the latter is serving a six-month suspension for indiscipline.
President of the Barbados Amateur Bodybuilding & Fitness Federation (BABBFF), Dr Alfred Sparman, remains upbeat about the team’s chances.
The team depart for Mexico City on July 26 and return on July 30. (MK)
