William “Smokey” Burke’s condition is improving, but he continues to be hospitalised in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, a source close to his family has reported.

But while he continues to battle the sickness that saw him miss last week’s Courtesy Mount Gay Pic-O-De-Crop Final at Kensington Oval, members of the calypso fraternity are coming together to raise funds for the ailing artiste.

A source connected to the calypsonian on Wednesday said there had been initial discussions to set up a fund to assist the veteran singer with his medical bills.

Burke fell ill just before last week’s competition and had to be replaced by close friend Colin Spencer at last notice.

While the source was unsure of the nature of Burke’s illness and his condition, a family member shed some light.

“He is doing a little better but he’s still in ICU,” the singer’s sister Delcia Burke told the NATION.

This was a change in fortunes from last week when Burke’s situation seemingly worsened after two days in the ICU.

Since then, well-wishes have poured in for Burke from fellow calypsonians and the public via social media.

Minister of Culture John King said he had been saddened by the news of Burke’s sickness and wished him a speedy recovery. (AD)
