The National Union of Public Workers (NUPW) has given management of the Samuel Jackman Prescod Institute of Technology (SJPI) a week to resolve an environmental issue that caused teachers to walk off the job on Monday.
Acting assistant general secretary Wayne Walrond said this was the state of play following meetings with SJPI’s management to look at “some quick solutions”.
“There is a temporary solution where they would do theoretical teaching and, hopefully, during this week they would do some industrial cleaning. Then we would have a further assessment by Monday to see how that would impact on the concerns raised,” he added, following the near three-hour meeting at the institute’s Wildey, St Michael campus, which began after 11 a.m.
Walrond said the issue stemmed from the workshop section of the institute where dust and poor ventilation issues contravened the Safety And Health At Work Act. (AD)
