Rabbit workshop
Now hare this. The demand for rabbit meat is outpacing supply. Head of extension services of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Security, Barney Callender, said there were about 30 rabbit farmers on the island, but they could not supply enoughfor the local market.
“There are some supermarkets that sell the meat on a weekly basis and they have indicated to me they would like 50 rabbits, but are only getting 30. Restaurateurs have also indicated they would like to have an availability of the meat as well,” he added.
Callender was speaking at a rabbit workshop yesterday at the Caribbean Agricultural Research and Development Institute facilityin Graeme Hall,Christ Church,
Close to 100 people turned up at the event to learn about rabbit breeding, nutrition, control of diseasesand habitat. (SB)
