King Mark, Queen Sheldene rule the road

Mark “Venom” Griffith and Sheldene Walrond proved that they are the rightful rulers when the fifth edition of the Barbados Public Workers Cooperative Credit Union Monarchs Of The Court road tennis tournament climaxed in front of a big crowd at De Big Rock Arena, Spring Garden, on Sunday night.

Minister of Sports John King, Leader of the Opposition Joe Atherley and former Minister of Tourism Richard Sealy were among the hundreds who witnessed Griffith taking his third Monarch and 24th crown by dumping Davien “Force Ripe” Taylor 21-4, 24-26, 21-14, 21-17. Walrond scored her seventh successive win over Kim Holder 22-20, 21-12.

Following the high drama of Taylor’s elimination of the 2017 champion Julian “Michael Jackson” White, excited numbers filled the arena from early speculating whether the cocky attacker could provide an encore against the supreme defender Griffith. Those fans and Taylor were shocked as Griffith showed his superior skill with a regal dismissal in the opening scene.

Facing the ignominy of an underweight pig at 4-20 Taylor ceded the final point and switched ends to seek better fortune in the second game.  He moved from two-all by assuming his “screw face” visage and recalibrating his scope to fire on target as the fans started roaring their appreciation.
