Barbados, boosted by the availability of No. 1 player, Darian King, is looking for their first win against Ecuador at this weekend’s Davis Cup tie at the National Tennis Centre.
During Wednesday’s media briefing at the Barbados Olympic Association ahead of the competition scheduled for Friday and Saturday, Barbados captain Damien Applewhaite revealed that though the match-ups were expected to be competitive they were very confident going into the battle.
“I am expecting a very competitive tie. The last time we played them at home, we lost 3-2 and we picked up an unfortunate injury during that tie. So we are very confident that we will come with our best team again and it will be very competitive,” said Applewhaite.
Barbados missed out on that tie on home soil in 2015 when Haydn Lewis suffered a flare-up of his back injury during the opening singles and was unable to compete in the doubles and reverse singles matches. The team again faced Ecuador in Ecuador in 2016 where they suffered a 5-0 loss. (RG)
