The Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) does not consider people in the north as second-class citizens, according to public relations officer Carl Padmore.
“Our operations team met this morning [Monday] and we are working hard to improve collection in the north. We do have challenges here but we want to ensure the north of the island does not suffer. We want to apologise for the delays as while it will be a challenge during bad weather, we do not want people to think we are treating them less than anyone else,” he said.
Padmore was speaking during a joint media briefing between the SSA and Barbados Water Authority (BWA) in Bowling Alley, St Joseph. The site visit followed the last WEEKEND NATION front page depicting a young man using water from a community tank next to a heap of garbage. The garbage was overflowing from some barrels placed there by residents.
BWA rapid response and communications manager Joy-Ann Haigh said this situation was unsatisfactory as they did not want to risk water contamination. The community garbage cans were relocated to another area next to an abandoned church. (CA)
