Unfit stalls a health risk
Stall owners doing business around the Constitution River Terminal do not pay rent for the space they occupy, yet a few of them have leased their stalls out to vendors.
And this, says chairman of the Barbados Transport Authority Ian Estwick, could be a contributing factor to why too many of these stalls are not in the best sanitary conditions.
He said the authority was concerned about this situation, given the implications it had for the health of commuters who patronised these businesses. That was why one of the first initiatives of the board – even before the authority’s administration started operating from the terminal four months ago – was to tour the area and speak with stall owners about the need to clean up their act.
The chairman was responding to the DAILY NATION regarding the leasing of a canteen there for rent of $1 000 monthly, plus utilities, and a report on the environmental surroundings of the area done by the Ministry of Health. (SP)
