Kaipo win starts off Top 8
Kaipo Marshall is proving his point. Tennis’ talented teen just continues to justify his spot on the Davis Cup side after opening the Top 8 Invitational with a routine straight-sets win on Wednesday at the National Tennis Centre.
Playing against training mate and fellow teenager Stephen Slocombe, the 16-year-old Marshall jumped out to an early break and gave no chances on his own serve while rolling to a 6-4, 6-3 victory on stadium court.
It was another statement win for the young two-time national men’s open champ, who forced his way onto the senior national squad a year ago with an impressive showing at these same de facto Davis Cup trials.
And Marshall picked up right where he left off, taking Slocombe’s second service game of the match before consolidating the break with four telling kick serves to go up 3-1. (JM)
