Pound-ing home pressure on Russia

Apparently not everyone wants Russia restored. It seems long-serving International Olympic Committee (IOC) member Richard “Dick” Pound isn’t in agreement with his body’s decision to return Russia to the Olympic movement after saying the IOC has lost its credibility on doping.

Pound expressed the view in last Thursday night’s feature address of the Flow Barbados Olympic Association awards ceremony at Hilton Barbados.

“Sport leadership has not stepped in to ensure that rules are followed. Notwithstanding the extent of the recent Russian doping scandal, only one international federation has acted to suspend its Russian federation,” reasoned Pound.

“The IOC failed to uphold the integrity of its own Olympic Games and has lost a huge amount of its moral leadership and credibility. It seems to think that Russia is too important to be excluded from the Olympic movement,” he added. (JM)
