VERMONT – US Senator Bernie Sanders says he will run again for president in 2020, making a second attempt to win the Democratic Party’s nomination.
The 77-year-old Vermont senator became a progressive political star in 2016 although he lost his candidacy bid.
Sanders – an independent who caucuses with the Democrats – is one of the best-known names to join a crowded and diverse field of Democratic candidates, and early polls suggest he is far ahead. ( BBC)
ALABAMA – The editor and publisher of a newspaper in Alabama is under fire for an editorial calling for mass lynchings by the Ku Klux Klan (KKK).
In an editorial headlined Klan Needs To Ride Again in the Democrat-Reporter last Thursday, Goodloe Sutton said Democrats were going to raise taxes and the KKK should hang them and raid Washington DC. Alabama lawmakers have called for him to resign. ( BBC)
PARIS – Fashion designer Karl Lagerfeld has died, aged 85, following a short illness.
The German designer, who was the creative director for Chanel and Fendi, was one of the industry’s most prolific figures and worked up until his death yesterday. His signature ponytail and dark glasses made him an instantly recognisable figure around the world. ( BBC)
