She joined the library’s staff 29 years ago as Library Assistant 3, but prior to officially becoming employed on February 13, 1990, Brathwaite gained hands-on experience volunteering at the library’s circulation desk where her sister Wavney Brathwaite worked as a library assistant at the time.

Brathwaite dispelled the notion that being a librarian is centred around a love for reading. She explained that instead, her love was for information and she described the management of information in a library as a science. She spoke passionately about her role saying, “Technology makes the process a whole lot easier. I came when we were using typewriters with ribbons and before we had to use cue cards to index journals, now we use the Ebscohost database.”
