THE VAST number of spectators and party-like atmosphere of this year’s Powerade Barbados Secondary Schools’ Athletics Championships (BSSAC) surpassed organisers’ expectations.

This was the view of assistant meet director Andrew Brathwaite during a post-meet interview with NATIONSPORT following the finals at the National Stadium on Friday.

“I think the meet was great. It exceeded expectations. Certainly the size and the atmosphere on the last day demonstrated the support that is there for track and field at that level, and I think that it sets the platform for us to do an even better job in providing opportunities for our young athletes,” he said.

“This is the first time in my memory that we have had five stands at the same time occupied by paying patrons. We used to have Stand ‘B’ reserved for the athletes, so the configuration certainly is different to what persons would have known.”

The use of the stands at the Stadium for the first time in four years has also encouraged students to once again come out in their numbers for the meet, which just celebrated its 34th year.
