This year’s Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) May Day celebrations will not feature a parade or the laying of wreaths at the feet of the Frank Walcott statue.

Instead, it will be a free family fun day on the grounds of Solidarity House.

During the May Day celebrations press conference yesterday at Solidarity House, Harmony Hall, St Michael, BWU general secretary Toni Moore said they had decided to update the activities in order to lift the spirits of workers.

“It is going to be different and fresh. Over the past few years we have been used to a May Day parade then we gather at Browne’s Beach, where we have activities but this year we have recognised [there is some] depression in the workforce and the BWU recognised the need to hype up things a bit and to renew hope and a sense of energy and optimism among our workers and their families,” she said.
