Shottas win it with six players
Annoying showers, a slippery court and being forced to finish the game one player short added to the drama of Wow Shottas winning their first Division 1 match when they met and beat St Barnabas ‘B’ on Friday night at the Netball Stadium.
Both Shottas and St Barnabas were playing their fourth game of the season after being promoted.
Shottas took the game which, at times, was played in driving rain 44-37. Former Barbados basketballer Wanda Agard-Belgrave and fellow six-footer Nikita Cyrus proved to be a handful for St Barnabas. Cyrus led with a near perfect 23 goals from 24 attempts, while Agard-Belgrave added 21 from 30 shots.
The scores were locked 10-10 at the end of the first quarter before Shottas eased away 19-17 and 34-23. With secondary school teacher Agard-Belgrave trying to keep her teammates on track to hold the advantage even as the wet court made the match look like netball on ice, goal keeper Tianna Morris created further tension in the final quarter.
