The all clear has been given and the section of the ABC Highway opposite the Pine Hill Dairy at Pine, St Michael has been reopened to pedestrian and vehicular traffic.
Acting assistant superintendent of police Trevor Blackman gave the update earlier tonight.
Blackman said it was an ammonia leak at the plant, and they were alerted by the smell just after 5 p.m. today. Around 8:55 p.m. it was brought under control when the valve was shut off.
There are no reports of illness or injury as a result of the incident.
Staff was evacuated from the building and residents downwind were informed of the situation. In addition to the closure of the Highway, police officers were strategically stationed along the Pine East-West Boulevard, Friendship and the nearby roundabouts to divert traffic.
Members of the Royal Barbados Police Force, Barbados Fire Service, Environmental Protection Division and officials from the Pine Hill Dairy responded to the incident. (SAT)
