Price hike

IN TWO MONTHS consumers will be paying more for local eggs, chicken and poultry products.

It is as a result of farmers using paper and bagasse pulp packaging for their products on July 1, when the ban on petrobased single use plastics takes effect.

President of the Barbados Egg and Poultry Producers Association (BEPPA), Stephen Layne, said that while consumers might have to pay more, the preservation of the environment was more important.

“I think we all must play our part in protecting the environment. The transition and the period of the transition is my only concern,” he said, while admitting that alternatives would cost more to farmers and consumers.

Layne was speaking to the NATION after a BEPPA seminar held at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centrel last Saturday. It focused on the principles of chicken farming and the bio-based alternatives for the packaging of poultry.
