All convicts sentenced to life imprisonment in Barbados won’t necessarily serve only 25 years in jail.
So said Attorney General Dale Marshall, in response to the Caribbean Court of Justice’s (CCJ) decision yesterday to set a precedent for life sentences in Barbados, and its urging to introduce legislative amendments to allow a protocol for minimum time served before eligibility for release.
Barbados’ highest appellate court ruled that convicted killer Renaldo Anderson Alleyne should spend a minimum of 25 years in prison, after dismissing the appeal that his six life sentences for the Campus Trendz bombing nine years ago were excessive.
But the Attorney General has warned that the CCJ’s decision does not mean all people sentenced to life won’t receive longer sentences. (BA)
