There are more than 3 000 species of mosquito and among them, they spread almost 30 diseases.

Today is the start of Mosquito Awareness Week in Barbados and over the next few days, we will tell you more about the types of mosquitoes found here, what they look like and where they breed.

During its short lifetime, roughly 21 days, a mosquito can lay between 500 and 700 eggs and under the right conditions, some of those eggs can live for three years before they hatch.

Mosquitoes are the cause of illnesses like malaria, dengue fever and zika.

We will provide some simple tips on how you can control these pests around your home by reducing breeding grounds in gutters, plant pots and tyres.

And we will tell you about the Vector Control Unit of the Ministry of Health, which has responsibility for this area. (Nation Online)
