Tenants’ Time Up

Time’s up for delinquent Barbados Investment and Development Corporation (BIDC) tenants who have racked up millions of dollars in rental arrears over the last decade.

And while not disclosing when action will begin, BIDC chairman John Rocheford told the media yesterday the state agency would begin a lock-out because the six-month grace period announced last August by Minister of International Business and Industry Ronald Toppin and its subsequent extension, ended on May 31.

“It cannot be business as usual. BIDC is also a business and we must run it as a business,” Rocheford said. “The money that we spend on various projects and other aspects of our business we have to get revenue from somewhere to keep those projects and so on, going. Therefore, we can no longer sit down and allow people to not pay the rent that they have agreed to pay. (GBM)
