National Hero Prescod’s home demolished
National Hero Samuel Jackman Prescod’s Belfield, Black Rock, St Michael home is no more.
Yesterday, heavy duty equipment moved onto the compound of the Nightengale Home, where Belfield House was located, and tore down the more than 200-year-old building to make way for a development.
President of the Barbados National Trust, Peter Stevens, did not mince words when he blasted the demolition, saying it showed a lack of regard for the island’s heritage and heroes.
“It seems to say that we, frankly, don’t care,” Stevens declared.
“It’s very hard to comprehend how something like this could happen. It shows, on the one hand, the complete lack of imagination on what to do with our built heritage. But, in this particular case, it’s not like it’s some old plantation building out in the middle of nowhere. This was one of the places where Samuel Jackman Prescod lived.” (HLE)
