NIS urged to go after debtors
The National Insurance Scheme (NIS) has been urged to be more aggressive when it comes to tax collection, particularly from companies owing millions in arrears in employee contributions.
In fact, Antoinette “Toni” Goddard, a retired statistician and a member of the audience at the 52nd anniversary public discussion on Wednesday night at the Lloyd Erskine Sandiford Centre, suggested that if these companies were found owing, they should not be allowed to re-register their businesses.
Her advice came after finance officer of compliance at the NIS, Francis Fontinelle-Walcott, charged that some employers were “deliberately” refusing to pay the Government these monies.
“They pay all their creditors, they pay everyone that they owe and Government is left for last. We can only take action based on what the National Insurance Act allows us to do and that is to go to court and try to collect . . . . Fontinelle-Walcott said. (SDB Media)
