Concern over some plastics options

MINISTER OF SMALL BUSINESS and Commerce Dwight Sutherland wants an eye kept on some of the product replacements for single-use plastics.

While applauding his administration for going in the right direction to ban all single-use plastics from July 1, expressed a concern shared by the Barbados National Standards Institution, and the Department of Commerce and Consumer Affairs.

After examination, they had found some of the bio-degradable replacements had levels of fluorine higher than the recommended 100-150 part per million levels.

Sutherland was delivering remarks to CARICOM and European Union partners at the opening ceremony of the Good Regulatory Practice Validation Workshop and Training Session, hosted by the CARICOM Regional Organisation for Standards and Quality, at the Baobab Towers, Warrens, St Michael, yesterday.
