Some still flouting plastics ban
Twenty-three days after the country banned single-use plastics, reports suggest that Barbadians are somewhat short on compliance.
In fact, hundreds of partygoers and some event organisers may have been flouting the law for most of this Crop Over season.
But the Ministry of Maritime Affairs and the Blue Economy, the Government entity responsible for enforcing the ban, is not yet in a position to “police” events to make sure patrons or organisers are not breaking the law.
Permanent Secretary in that ministry, Elsworth Reid, told THE NATION the law was clear.
“They cannot be used. They are not supposed to be used, period. Those plastic items that are on the list should not be used,” he stressed, after it was reported that patrons at recent events were still using single-use plastic cups for drinks and single-use food containers and cutlery. (RA)
