Emancipation festivities scaled down
Members of the Pan African Coalition of Organisation are urging Government and Barbadians to embrace Emancipation Day more.
Baba John Howell and Tony Reid made the call after their annual Emancipation Day celebrations at the Emancipation statue at the JTC Ramsay roundabout this morning.
“Unfortunately I don’t think we as a people really and truly appreciate and understand the significance of Emancipation; this is from the top down. Our Government, whichever party is in power, don’t seem to fully understand and appreciate it. The head tends to set the tone and if Government doesn’t recognise and understand it to the fullest, then it is difficult to get them to demonstrate to the people how significant it is,” said Reid.
There was the usual commemoration of the Emancipation festivities which included the likes of Barbados Ambassador to CARICOM David Comissiong, Alvaro Sanchez, Venezuela’s Charge d’Affaires and cultural presentations. (RA)
