Sobers 400 freestyle B champ
Olympian Alex Sobers is the Pan American Games 400 freestyle B champion after capturing that title on Tuesday night at the Aquatic Centre here in Lima, Peru.
Sobers won the race in a time of 3:58.39 defeating Puerto Rico’s Christian Bayo, 3: 58.64. The very partisan home crowd found plenty of excitement as Peruvian Daniel Vargas snatched the third spot in 3:59.09.
The 20-year-old Sobers would have been seeking an encore in last night’s men’s 200 freestyle after he made the B finals following a fourth placing in the morning’s first heat with a time of 1:51.76.
That was won by Trinidad and Tobago’s Dylan Carter, 1:49.08, second was Grant House of the United States, 1:49.40, while third was Angel Zambrano of Venezuela, 1:50.39.
Both Danielle Titus and Jack Kirby had advanced to last night’s B finals. Titus finished her Heat 2 in the women’s 200 back in a time of 2:21.37 which was more than 11 seconds behind the winner from the US Alexandra Walsh, who was clocked at 2:10.06.
Kirby finished one spot better in his heat 3 but also far behind the winner. He finished with a time of 2:05. 59 as American Nicholas Alexander dominated in 1:59.81.
