Barbados sending team to WorldSkills in Russia
Barbados will be sending a six-member team of some of its finest young, skilled professionals to compete at the 45th biennial WorldSkills Competition in Kazan, Russia, from August 22 to 27.
This unique, live technical and vocational skills competition is hosted by WorldSkills International, which is the global hub for skills excellence and development.
It is the second time that Barbados will be competing at the event. Two years ago Barbados sent a four-member team to WorldSkills Abu Dhabi.
The team to WorldSkills Kazan 2019 includes Terrique Ward (car painting), Shae White (cooking), Peabo Sampson (fashion technology), Kristina Patrick (graphic design technology), Zaria Archer (hairdressing) and Danny Mayers (restaurant service).
The six competitors were the gold medal winners in their respective skill areas at the fourth biennial WorldSkills Barbados 2018 competition.
They earned the opportunity to represent Barbados at WorldSkills Kazan 2019 by achieving 75 per cent or more in the finals of WorldSkills Barbados competition, and, 80 per cent or more in the Competitors Developmental Programme, which focuses on soft skills development.
The competitors will be accompanied by skill experts who will serve as coaches as well as judges at WorldSkills Kazan.
The experts are Negas Alleyne-Browne (car painting), Peter Edey (cooking), Joy Prime (fashion technology), Shelly Mayers (graphic design technology), Arlette Knight-Olton (hairdressing) andRoderick Prescod (restaurant service).
The team officials are official delegate Henderson Eastmond, technical delegate Dario Walcott, technical delegate assistant Rosline Cumberbatch and team leader Sarah Gilkes-Daniel. (PR)
