There were tears of joy, smiles, laughter, sighs of relief, disbelief and even a little pain as the 2019 Barbados Scholarship and Exhibition winners were announced yesterday when the Caribbean Advanced Proficiency Examination (CAPE) results were revealed.
The ceremony took place at Erdiston Teachers Training College where Deputy Chief Education Officer (schools) Joy Adamson said the number of winners was greater than in the past two years.
This year, there were 27 Scholarship winners and 36 Exhibition winners, in comparison to 25 Scholarship winners and 34 Exhibition winners last year and 26 Scholarship winners and 19 Exhibition winners in 2017.
Parents and students filled the auditorium as they excitedly waited for the announcements to be made. In the end, Queen’s College students had earned most of the accolades, with 16 Scholarship winners and 17 Exhibition winners. Harrison College was next with ten scholarship winners and ten exhibition winners; Barbados Community College (BCC) with one scholarship and one exhibition; The St Michael School with seven exhibitions and Christ Church Foundation with one exhibition.
Minister of Education Santia Bradshaw congratulated everyone for a job well done and said she was pleased the numbers were increasing, especially in the field of science and technology.(CA)
