Fire Chief’s concern
The towering piles of flammable materials at reprocessing facilities across the island are raising red flags for the Barbados Fire Service.
Chief Fire Officer Errol Maynard told THE NATION yesterday that the fire department was launching a programme to monitor the situation, in light of the fires at the Sustainable Barbados Recycling Centre on June 18 and B’s Recycling plant on Tuesday.
He said the waste piles were a potential danger.
“The amount of waste at the reprocessing plants is of major concern,” Maynard said. “We definitely have to have a national approach to get rid of the piles of materials at the facilities because they are high and flammable and if they remain for too long, it would definitely be a problem. We will be assigning officers at these facilities to make sure they have emergency plans in place, but I think it needs to be a national effort not only by the Fire Service, but by the particular entity.” (SB)
