Dems ‘gearing up’
A year after being catapulted up the ranks to raise the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) from the ashes, president Verla De Peiza says she believes the Dems are on their way to being ready for the next general election, constitutionally due in 2023.
Speaking after the first anniversary of her election to lead the party, De Peiza said it was right where it should be as it embarks on the unenviable task of turning around the humiliating 30-0 defeat suffered at the polls May 24 last year.
She told THE NATION the new DLP way was one of inclusion and transparency, starting with the processes which would lead to those chosen to face the polls four years from now, and that remained their main focus.
“In January and February the Executive and General Councils approved a revised selection process. It starts with the branches, which will interview prospective candidates before recommending names to the Executive Council, which will conduct its own due diligence before the names are passed to the General Council for ratification,” the president revealed.
