Barbados’ No. 1 junior Kennie King and national volleyballer Dominick Scantlebury provided royal hope on the second day of the Caribbean Regional Badminton Confederation (CAREBACO) Junior Championship at the Wildey Gymnasium on Friday.

On a day when victories proved elusive for most of the Under-19 Barbados players, King made a strong bid for a crown by crushing Reval Jaggessar of Trinidad and Tobago 21-4, 21-8 in the men’s singles. He then teamed up with Scantlebury in the male doubles to brush aside the Trinidad and Tobago duo of Stephen Ganness and Amir Mahabharata 21-10, 21-8.

Scantlebury, who was part of the champion Under-19 volleyball team at the regional Cazova Tournament in Jamaica, proved to be the perfect match for King. Playing a very aggressive and elevated game, Scantlebury and King destroyed any high returns with matching and consistent smashes.

Scantlebury, with most of his volleyball teammates cheering him on from the stands, was also victorious in the mixed doubles, teaming up with Robyn Sobers to outlast the Suriname pair of Imani Mangroe and Geordan Tjon Kon Joe 13-21, 21-19, 21-19 in a thrilling contest. (KB)
