Dark and dry days
It could be a dark, dry weekend with water, power, telephone and internet outages across Barbados.
This is as a result of severe shortages of electrical power as the Barbados Light & Power Company continues to grapple with faulty generator equipment, which is also expected to trigger water outages in many areas.
The country’s largest utility company yesterday confirmed the outages could affect approximately 10 000 residential customers and scores of business providers islandwide, and run through this weekend and into early next week.
Hundreds of Barbadians have been without water in the last month, and yesterday’s power problems will lead to more dry taps.
The Barbados Water Authority issued a release yesterday informing customers that the power outages had already started to impact the operations at the authority’s facilities.
“The BWA relies mainly on electrical generation from the BL&P to power its stations, therefore these electrical outages may result in the inability of the authority to pump water in several areas and hence a loss of supply to customers through the pipes,” the BWA said in the statement.
“While the BWA cannot control where these electrical outages may occur, it stands ready to assist persons via water tanker as a temporary measure wherever possible,” the utility company added.
