Plea for Bahamas

Article by RACHELLE AGARD

PRIME MINISTER MIA MOTTLEY is calling on Barbadians to donate generously to hurricane-ravaged islands of The Bahamas through a telethon on Sunday.

“However difficult our circumstances are, we are blessed and we are capable. However much we have, we have the ability to share. However much we are in an IMF [International Monetary Fund] programme, we have the ability to cut and contrive and to share, because in less than 24 hours people have lost life, security, stability, hope, property, and the ability to function,” she said yesterday.

Mottley made the call at an official handing over of medical equipment by the Barbados International Business Association (BIBA) to the Ministry of Health and Wellness at the Eunice Gibson Polyclinic in Warrens, St Michael.

The islands of Grand Bahama and Abaco were battered by Category 5 Hurricane Dorian between Monday night and Tuesday, leaving, up to press time, seven dead and 70 000 people severely affected.

“Our desire to give naturally is not the same thing as if we’re sending the goods overnight to Grenada or St Vincent or St Lucia. The complexity of the transport considerations and the logistics has caused my Government to say to Barbadians that we want you to dig deep and give, but as the Bahamian government has indicated, it is probably better to donate cash at this point in time,” the Prime Minister explained.  (RA)
