Garbage too close for comfort

SOME BARBADIANS continue to suffer with smelly heaps of garbage near their homes.

In many instances, the density of the neighbourhoods requires residents to pile their garbage in one area which can become unsightly in just a matter of days, especially when people from outside the neighbourhood also take their garbage there.

At the corner of 4th Avenue Parris Gap and Morris Gap in Westbury, St Michael, the garbage pile has reached chest height. Deborah Gollop, who lives next to it, said it had been a problem for years.

“When I first came out here in 2011, I found this dumping spot here, but I’m told it was always like this. People bring stuff from all around, so it can fill up fast, but it can take up to three weeks before the garbage people come, so it piling up, piling up,” she said.

Gollop added the situation worsened when rain fell, as this was when the garbage smelt its worst.
