Barbados in LGBTQ ‘bad books’
An international travel website has listed Barbados as the most dangerous CARICOM country for lesbian/gay/ bisexual/transgender/ queer (LGBTQ) travellers.
But that ranking is not sitting well with locals.
Earlier this week, travel website Asher & Lyric published the LGBTQ Danger Index, ranking 150 countries with the most international tourists. The list, which was then picked up by the publication Gay Times, listed Nigeria at the top, Barbados at eight and Jamaica at 18.
In response, human rights activist Donnya Piggott said the position was not the most accurate, but she stressed that the buggery law, which is still on our law books, was a catalyst.
“There are LGBT people who are public and living their lives, I’m not saying they may not get slack in one way or the other, everyone does, but I think if it’s going to be a comparison Barbados should be nowhere at No. 8. (TG)
