Education is crucial in combating the scourge of doping among athletes, says chairman of the Caribbean Regional Anti-Doping Organisation, Dr Adrian Lorde.
He was giving a lunchtime lecture entitled Performance Enhancing Drugs In Sport at the National Council of Substance Abuse headquarters in Belleville, St Michael, as part of the council’s Drug Awareness Month activities.
“Education is [the] key and what we plan to do is to push education first and then do testing. We just don’t want to turn up and do testing. In football, for instance, we have done education with their Under-17 and Under-19 national teams. Once they are aware, then we can go and do testing,” he said.
Lorde, who is also the chairman of the National Anti-Doping Commission (NADC) of Barbados, said that, under the auspices of the Barbados Olympic Association, the commission had tested athletes attending major competitions across sports.
