Sugar changes to produce more molasses
The rum industry stands to benefit from the redevelopment of the sugar industry.
Minister of Agriculture Indar Weir said rum producers were eager to use more local molasses to make rum, but there was a low quantity of the by-product.
Although he did not go into details about the redevelopment and when the new structure would roll out, he said Barbados would be increasing its sugar cane acreage by considerable amounts, leading to more sugar and its by-products.
“Barbados’ rum industry is highly dependent on what we can do in agriculture to make sure that we give you the molasses that you need to make rum. I have been calling on rum producers to use more local molasses because the inputs in Barbados rum is what would define us and make us unique when we jostle for market share.” (SB)
