BARBADOS WON’T BE quick to hop on the Chinese travel bandwagon.
Medical officials, however, are cautioning locals against travelling to Wuhan, the capital of Central China’s Hubei province, which is now the epicentre of the novel (new) coronavirus (nCoV).
During Starcom Network’s Brass Tacks Sunday call-in programme yesterday, Chief Medical Officer Dr Kenneth George said although that step had yet to be taken, officials were keeping an eye on the situation.
“What many of the countries are doing is restricting travel from ground zero, which is Wuhan. If you think about it in terms of global economies, closing borders from China will not work in most instances and it is probably counterproductive.
“We have advised Barbadians that non-essential travel to Wuhan should not take place. This is not a travel ban, however; this is encouraging Barbadians not to go to the epicentre. And if Barbadians are travelling to other parts of China, they need to take precautions,” George said via telephone link-up. (TG)
