It was a fearful middle class which helped to topple the Democratic Labour Party (DLP) administration, says former Government minister Ronald Jones.
Yesterday, during the question and answer session of the renewed lunchtime lecture at DLP headquarters, George Street, Belleville, St Michael, Jones said, however, the devastating clean sweep at the polls did not shake him.
“I have not gone through tears because we lost 30-0. The DLP was crushed in 2018, not because of an absence of ideas or the [lack of] execution of ideas, but because of an insufficient voice penetrating the millennials and the middle class, which the DLP had created the firmament for them to grow.
“We became caught up saying we were working with the poor, downtrodden, those who couldn’t help themselves, forgetting that the middle class of Barbados is a scared class [where] a loss of two pay days or if somebody in the family dies and there is one less income, [that] will put them right back down to the class they are trying to escape from,” he said.
