There are now four confirmed cases, with one death, of the novel coronavirus (Covid-19) in the Caribbean Community (CARICOM).

Yesterday, Jamaica confirmed its second case while Guyana and St Vincent and the Grenadines both reported they each had one. All of the victims are women.

Meanwhile, the United States last night suspended all travel from Europe, except the United Kingdom (UK), as President Donald Trump announced new measures to combat its spread there.

Also yesterday, the novel coronavirus was declared a global pandemic by the World Health Organisation (WHO), having swept through at least 114 countries and killed more than 4 000 people. It’s the first time the WHO has called an outbreak a pandemic since the H1N1 “swine flu” in 2009. (SP)
