Workers at the Sanitation Service Authority (SSA) are off the job.
Public relations officer Carl “Alff” Padmore said they expressed concern about several issues, including the response to the topical COVID-19 coronavirus.
He said in the case of the coronavirus, it was a national issue but they did not want to spread panic, while recognising the suppliers were short of sanitisers and they are trying to put measures in place.
“The SSA workers are on the frontline of sanitation, the frontline of health in Barbados, and therefore, we are trying to bring a sense of calm to the situation,” he said.
There are no cases of coronavirus recorded in Barbados.
The workers gathered outside the Wildey, St Michael offices before 7 a.m. today.
They are currently meeting with Minister of the Environment Trevor Prescod, acting general manager Janice Jones and the trade union representatives.
The re-establishment of the Health and Safety Committee and other issues are also being discussed.
Padmore apologised to members of the public for the delay in garbage collection today.
