Cost-U-Less internationally has temporarily raised the wages of its hourly employee – a move that will also affect workers in Barbados.

In a statement released yesterday the company announced that in response to the spread of novel coronavirus COVID-19, Cost-U-Less would provide a temporary increase by BDS$2 per hour for hourly employees.

The increased compensation will be given to the employees in the company’s 12 stores, including those in Barbados, St Croix, St Thomas, Cayman Islands, St Maarten, Curaçao and the US for all hours worked between March 8 and April 4.

“We are very proud of the enterprising efforts of our employees in our stores and along our supply chain. Our employees have shown up and worked harder than ever to ensure that our shelves are stocked and that our stores are ready for business in Cost-U-Less,” Dan McConnell, president, The North West Company International, said in the statement.

The company stated that in recent weeks a number of additional measures to combat COVID-19 had been introduced including increased frequency of sanitising all check-outs and shopping carts and cleaning other surfaces several times along with extensive wipe downs during closed hours.

“Health and safety has been prioritised for all employees. Cost-U-Less is also devoting special store hours at each location to seniors to provide a safe and comfortable shopping experience.

“Our employees have ensured a continuous and unencumbered supply of food and general merchandise to our stores. We are delighted to provide this temporary wage increases to thank them for their efforts,” said McConnell. (AC)
