Long lines for Welfare cheques

Several people who turned up at the Welfare Department, St Michael and Family Services Section yesterday for food vouchers and cheques were turned away.

Just after 10 a.m., more than 15 people stood outside the offices at Roebuck Street and Country Road.

Checks made revealed that many of them were not aware of some of the new measures the department has in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

One is that clients are no longer able to have face-to-face appointments with officers. They are now being asked to have those appointments via telephone – cellphone or landline. (SB)
