BWU: Vacation up to workers

Vacation during the COVID-19 shutdown must be agreed to by workers if employers give less than two week’s notice.

That was the word from the Barbados Workers’ Union (BWU) after the issue continued to surface in light of the closure of businesses. 

Last week, Opposition Senator and trade unionist Caswell Franklyn blasted some employers for seeking to exploit workers as a result of measures to restrict the community spread of COVID-19. He said they were insisting employees should take vacation during the 14-day partial shutdown, which began Saturday night.

The Barbados Employers’ Confederation (BEC) later warned businesses against coercing employees who refused to go on vacation with less than 14 days’ notice. (PR/AC)
