Government takes $28m to assist Bajans
Government has taken $28 500 000 from the Consolidated Fund to supplement the 2020/21 Estimates and Expenditure to help Barbadians get through the period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Of that amount, $10 million was allocated to the Prime Minister’s Office, $10 million to the Ministry of People’s Empowerment and Elder Affairs and $8.5 million to the Government’s Procurement Department.
The House of Assembly met yesterday to approve the supplementaries and Minister in the Ministry of Finance Ryan Straughn noted it was “unusual for the House to meet on the first day of any financial year (April 1) to introduce a supplementary”.
But he stressed this was happening “because of the serious impact of COVID-19” on Barbados’ economy. (GC)
