GEORGETOWN – The number of confirmed cases of the coronavirus in Guyana on Sunday, jumped to 29, with reports of five new cases in 24 hours.

In a statement late Sunday, the Ministry of Public Health also reported that 110 people have now been tested. The total number of deaths remains at four.

Over the past week, 21 new cases have been recorded and that figure is worrying for health officials who are now advising citizens to wear a covering over the  mouth and nose once they must venture out into the public.

The ministry is asking citizens to stay at home and with a national curfew in place, employers are being encouraged to have their workers work from home.

The ministry reiterated a warning about social gatherings, reminding that more than five people are not permitted to be in any one area together and citizens must follow the physical distancing rules and guidelines.

Last week, the Pan American Health Organisation (PAHO), reported that Guyana could possibly see 20 000 cases of the coronavirus by early May.
