Police today launched an unnatural death investigation in the shooting of 20-year-old Jeremiah Jamilla Grannum of Woodland, St George.

Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Royal Barbados Police Force, Acting Inspector Rodney Inniss, was on the scene of the incident. He said police received a telephone call around 8:45 a.m. of a shooting incident at Hinkson Gap, Corner of Baxters Road and New Orleans, St Michael.

“We responded to the report and on arrival and in searching the general area, at Fifth Avenue, we came across the body of a . . . male lying in the middle of the road,” he said.

Inniss said it was reported to police that there was an altercation between the deceased and a number of men. Inniss said the dead man was reportedly chased by two masked men who were firing shots at him. The police (PRO) said the chase ended up with the deceased falling in Fifth Avenue, New Orleans.

A statement from police said medical personnel pronounced Grannum dead at the scene.

Family members said the victim was an aspiring reggae artiste who had videos on YouTube. He was described as a nice person who people warmed up to.

Inniss said the investigations are ongoing. He said it is difficult to cordon areas but six different areas have been cordoned as crowds gather to get a glimpse of what is happening.

Soldiers from the Barbados Defence Force also responded to the scene of the shooting.

Inniss asked anyone with information in relation to the incident to contact 211 Police Emergency or any police station.

This latest shooting has occurred even as Barbados remains under a 24-hour curfew with exceptions made for essential workers, shopping and other measures under strict guidelines. The curfew was imposed as Government works to limit the spread of novel coronavirus (COVID-19). (KG)
