Two men who were charged with cruelty to animals were scheduled to appear in the District ‘D’ Magistrates’ court on April 30.

A statement from police spokesman, Acting Inspector Rodney Inniss, said Matthew Omar Downes, 36, of Pasture Lane, Lammings, St Joseph, was charged that, between April 3 and 20, 2020, he wantonly and cruelly abused, tortured and caused unnecessary suffering to an animal, a monkey in contravention of Section 3 Subsection (1) clause (a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act Chapter 144A.

Rico Jamar Maynard, 30, of Airy Hill, St Joseph, was charged that, between April 3 and 20, 2020, he caused or procured to be wantonly and cruelly abused, tortured and caused unnecessary suffering to an animal, a monkey in contravention of Section 3 Subsection (1)  clause (a) of the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act Chapter 144A.

The statement said police were made aware of a video circulating on  social media platform WhatsApp which showed a monkey, caught in a metal cage, being doused with a substance and then set on fire whilst still in the cage.

Investigations were conducted which led to the accused being arrested and charged for the offence of Cruelty to Animals.

They were scheduled to appear at the District ‘D’ Magistrates’ court on April 30. (PR)
