Joe: It’s a foolhardy move

Opposition Leader Bishop Joseph Atherley has taken Government to task over the decision to use the Catastrophe Fund as part of its $2 billion stimulus package to mitigate the economic fallout from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Yesterday, during a press conference via Zoom, Atherley chided the Mia Amor Mottley-led administration for accessing the fund just one month before the hurricane season begins.

He said the move was somewhat hypocritical, as back in late 2017, Mottley slammed the then Freundel Stuart administration for attempting something similar, while she was leader of the Opposition.

During her marathon address last Wednesday night, the Prime Minister revealed that companies registered to pay Value Added Tax (VAT), but could prove that their cash flow was severely disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic and have implemented measures to contain the outbreak, have been given a $40 million lifeline.  (CLM)
